There are supercars, and then there are milestones. The Porsche Carrera GT firmly belongs to the latter. Built in the early 2000s, it captured a moment in time when engineering bravado mattered more than software and soundtracks were measured in revs, not speakers. Now, Porsche has revisited that moment with extraordinary care, unveiling a Factory Re-Commissioned Carrera GT finished in the iconic Salzburg design.
The inspiration comes from one of the most important cars in Porsche history: the Porsche 917, which secured the brand’s first overall victory at Le Mans in 1970. Its red-and-white Salzburg livery has since become a visual shorthand for endurance racing glory. Translating that design onto the sculpted body of a Carrera GT was never going to be a simple homage. Instead, Porsche treated it as a full creative and technical exercise, ensuring the proportions, contrasts and surfaces felt native to the car rather than retrofitted.
This project was carried out under Porsche’s Sonderwunsch Factory Re-Commission programme, a service reserved for clients who want their cars restored, re-engineered and reimagined by the same hands that built them originally. The donor car, a 2005 Carrera GT, was stripped down to its core. The naturally aspirated V10 was completely overhauled, carbon-fibre elements were refinished, and the car was returned to a mechanical state that mirrors factory-fresh condition.
Visually, the result is striking without being loud. Guards Red and white flow across the bodywork, protected beneath a transparent film so the car can be driven as intended. Matte carbon accents on the roof and aerodynamic elements add a contemporary edge, reminding us that this is not a museum piece but a living, breathing machine.
Inside, the transformation continues. The cabin is wrapped in deep Guards Red Alcantara, contrasted by exposed carbon and motorsport-grade materials. It feels intimate and purposeful, like a tailored racing suit rather than a luxury lounge. Even the luggage compartment and bespoke travel set follow the same colour story, reinforcing the sense that no detail was too small to matter.
What makes this Carrera GT truly special is not just its appearance or craftsmanship, but the philosophy behind it. Commissioned by a passionate owner, the car was built to be used, driven and experienced. It stands as a reminder that Porsche’s greatest creations are defined not only by performance figures, but by emotion, heritage and intent.
In an era of electrification and digital perfection, this Salzburg-inspired Carrera GT feels like a love letter to everything that made driving unforgettable. A legend, not preserved in amber, but reborn with purpose.
