The next chapter for Mercedes-AMG has arrived in the form of the GT SUV. It is the first full-size sport utility vehicle to be developed entirely in-house by the Affalterbach performance division. This is not a modified Mercedes-Benz platform. It is a ground-up statement of intent, built on the brand’s electric architecture.

Following the recently unveiled AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, the SUV is the second model based on the new AMG.EA electric performance platform. The shared foundation signals a clear strategy. AMG is building a distinct family of electric vehicles, applying its engineering philosophy to the formats that are coming to define the market. The full-size GT SUV is a direct entry into that conversation, with its US arrival slated for the summer of 2027.

Three versions will be offered. The lineup begins with the dual-motor GT53 and moves to the tri-motor GT55 and GT63 models. In the top specifications, one motor drives the front axle while two independent motors power the rear wheels, allowing for precise torque distribution. The peak output for the GT63 reaches 1,153 horsepower, enabling a 0 to 60 mile per hour time of 2.6 seconds.

The engineering focus extends beyond straight-line acceleration. A new AMG Active Ride Control+ suspension system manages body movements using hydraulic dampers and adjustable air springs, completely replacing traditional anti-roll bars. The system is designed to keep the vehicle level through corners and reduce dive under braking, aiming for both dynamic composure and long-distance comfort.

Perhaps the most debated aspect of any electric performance car is its sound. AMG addresses this with a system called AMGForce Sport+. It generates simulated V8 sounds for the GT55 and GT63, and six-cylinder sounds for the GT53. The brand states the audio is derived from recordings of real engines, with the character changing based on driving style. Drivers can also use steering-wheel paddles to trigger simulated gear changes, an attempt to restore a layer of mechanical interaction.

The exterior design follows the language of its sedan sibling, scaled to a larger form. A sharp roofline, muscular arches, and frameless windows define the profile. Inside, the cabin is driver-focused with a pair of large displays and an optional screen for the front passenger. A three-person rear bench and folding seats provide utility, with 21.4 cubic feet of cargo space and an additional front trunk.

With the GT SUV, AMG has established its blueprint for a high-performance electric future. The vehicle is a container for the brand’s most advanced thinking on power, handling, and the sensory experience of driving, all applied to the vehicle type that now commands the most attention.
