There are moments when a model changes more than just its generation. The new Audi RS 5 feels like one of those moments. It marks Audi Sport’s first step into high performance plug in hybrids, and rather than diluting the RS formula, it sharpens it.
Under the sculpted hood sits an improved 2.9 liter twin turbo V6 producing 375 kW and 510 PS. It works together with a 130 kW electric motor integrated into the eight speed transmission. The combined system output is 470 kW, or 639 PS, with 825 Nm of torque.
The result is a 0 to 100 kmh sprint in just 3.6 seconds, yet the car can also travel up to 84 kilometers on electric power alone, and even 87 kilometers in city driving. Charging at up to 11 kW means a full charge takes around 2.5 hours.
This is what makes the new RS 5 so fascinating. It can leave your driveway in silence and still dominate a mountain road minutes later.
RS 5 Sedan: Sharp, Focused, Purposeful
The RS 5 Sedan is the more compact, more concentrated expression of this new era. Its coupé like silhouette flows into a subtle ducktail rear, while the body is widened by around nine centimeters compared to the standard A5. Flared fenders, a strong diffuser and matte oval exhaust tips make it clear that this is not a regular executive sedan.
Behind the wheel, the transformation is immediate. The new quattro system with Dynamic Torque Control introduces electro mechanical torque vectoring at the rear axle, a world first in a production car. Torque distribution is calculated every five milliseconds, constantly adjusting to steering angle, throttle input and road conditions.
A new center differential with preload keeps the drivetrain partially locked even when you lift off the throttle, improving turn in and reducing understeer. The sensation is one of precision and composure. The car feels lighter than its 2,355 kilogram curb weight suggests, rotating cleanly and putting power down with authority.
Select RS torque rear mode and, on a closed course, the Sedan reveals a playful side with controlled oversteer. In RS sport mode, it becomes laser focused and brutally effective.
RS 5 Avant: Performance Without Compromise
If the Sedan is sharp and direct, the RS 5 Avant adds another layer of versatility. It carries the same 639 PS hybrid system and identical torque vectoring technology, yet wraps it in a body that blends everyday practicality with serious pace.
At 2,370 kilograms, the Avant is only slightly heavier, and from the driver’s seat the difference is almost imperceptible. The widened stance, RS specific suspension with twin valve dampers and optional ceramic brakes ensure it remains composed and aggressive when pushed.
With the optional Audi Sport package, top speed increases to 285 kmh, accompanied by exclusive design details and 21 inch wheels. It is the kind of car that can carry luggage for a weekend away and still embarrass dedicated sports cars on the autobahn.
A Digital Cockpit for Drivers
Inside both versions, the RS identity continues. The curved MMI Panorama display integrates an 11.9 inch virtual cockpit and a 14.5 inch central touchscreen, complemented by a 10.9 inch passenger display as standard.
Performance data such as G forces, lap times, tire temperatures and drift angles can be recorded and analyzed in detail . The boost function, activated at the push of a button, delivers maximum acceleration for ten seconds, regardless of the selected driving mode.
Orders open in the first quarter of 2026, with deliveries expected from summer 2026. Production takes place in Neckarsulm, Germany.
The new Audi RS 5 proves that electrification does not have to mean compromise. In both Sedan and Avant form, it feels like the beginning of a new chapter for Audi Sport, one where efficiency and emotion finally share the same stage.
