Last November in Geneva, the biggest prize in watchmaking went to a watch with one hand. The Classique Souscription 2025 won the Grand Prix de l'Aiguille d'Or at the GPHG. It was also the watch that opened Breguet's 250th anniversary, and it did so without a single complication. A year later, the house is back with it, this time in platinum.

To see why this watch matters, go back to 1797. Abraham-Louis Breguet sold the original Souscription pocket watch by subscription. Clients paid a quarter of the price up front, and that money funded production. The watch had one hand, a large and very clear dial, and a movement designed to be built well and built efficiently. His aim was to make a properly fine watch available to more people without cheapening it. Two centuries later, crowdfunding works the same way.

The 2025 wristwatch carried that idea into a new era. Its case was cast in Breguet gold, the house's own blond alloy of gold, silver, copper and palladium. The dial was white grand feu enamel, and the watch ran on the new hand-wound calibre VS00, which has 144 components.

What changes in platinum

The case is now 950 platinum. The dial is still white grand feu enamel, but the Breguet signature, the Arabic numerals and the minute track are now in blue petit feu enamel. Petit feu is fired at a lower temperature on top of the grand feu base. That means the markings are fired into the enamel itself, glass on glass, so the blue has a depth that print doesn't. Next to the cool grey of platinum, the dial looks colder and sharper than the warm gold edition.

On a single-hand watch, that matters more than it would elsewhere. You read the time from where the hand sits between the hour numerals, with the minute track filling in the detail. The track and numerals do all the work, and now they are the most crafted part of the dial.

The same heart

Turn the watch over and you find the first edition. The movement hasn't changed: gilded brass in the same shade as Breguet gold, with fine shot-blasting on the plate and bridges. Some people will expect a platinum watch to have a rhodium-toned movement to match the case. I think the gold tone is the more interesting choice. It ties the two editions together, so the platinum watch carries the original on the inside.

Breguet launched this second version exactly a year after the Aiguille d'Or, and that timing feels intentional. The award showed the formula was right, so the house left the formula alone and changed only the material and the enamel. Most brands would have added a complication or a new dial colour to keep things fresh. Breguet trusted the watch to hold up a second time, and it does.
