Two worlds defined by precision have come together as Leica Camera and Formula 1 announce a new licensing partnership, introducing the Leica Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition. Unveiled in Los Angeles on October 20, 2026, the special edition brings elements of motorsport engineering into one of Leica's most celebrated compact cameras, combining German craftsmanship with materials and design details inspired by the racetrack.

The collaboration marks a new chapter for both brands, built around their shared appreciation for engineering, performance and the importance of capturing a decisive moment. While Formula 1 operates in fractions of a second, Leica has spent more than a century perfecting the art of preserving them.
Inspired By The World Of Formula 1
At first glance, the Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition retains the familiar silhouette of Leica's premium compact camera. A closer look, however, reveals a series of distinctive modifications inspired by the materials and functionality found inside a modern Formula 1 cockpit.

The most notable addition is genuine carbon fibre, a material closely associated with motorsport for its strength, rigidity and low weight. Specially manufactured and tested in Germany, the carbon fibre appears across several components, including the wireless charging handgrip, thumb rest and soft release button.
The camera body is finished in black Microvelour, a textured, non-slip material designed to resemble the tactile surfaces of a Formula 1 steering wheel. Subtle red accents on the shutter release and thumb rest function button take inspiration from the colour coded controls used by racing drivers, adding both visual contrast and a functional reference to the sport.
Official Formula 1 branding appears on the engraved top plate and matching lens cap, while a specially designed rope strap featuring both brands' logos completes the package. The camera is presented in exclusive packaging with a red interior, reinforcing its motorsport identity.

Rather than simply placing a racing logo on an existing camera, Leica has incorporated the collaboration into the materials and physical experience of using it.
The Technology Behind The Design
Beneath its distinctive exterior, the Formula 1 Edition retains the photographic capabilities of the Leica Q3 43.
At its heart is a 60 megapixel full frame BSI CMOS sensor, paired with Leica's APO-Summicron 43 f/2 ASPH. lens. The fixed 43mm focal length offers a natural perspective close to human vision, making it particularly suited to documentary photography, portraits and capturing the atmosphere surrounding a race weekend.
The lens combines exceptional optical sharpness with an f/2 maximum aperture, allowing photographers to isolate subjects against softly rendered backgrounds. An integrated macro mode provides additional flexibility for capturing smaller details, from mechanical components to the intricate surfaces of a racing car.

Leica's Triple Resolution Technology allows photographers to select between 60, 36 and 18 megapixels while maintaining the full sensor area. The Maestro IV processor supports fast image processing, while hybrid autofocus combines phase detection, contrast measurement and depth mapping.
The camera also supports video recording up to 8K, alongside an ISO range extending from 50 to 100,000.
Beyond its familiar technical specifications, Leica has introduced an exclusive photographic profile called the Formula 1 Leica Look. Developed specifically for this edition, the profile increases contrast and colour saturation to reflect the visual intensity of motorsport.
Available through the Leica FOTOS app, the look can be transferred directly to the camera, previewed during shooting and applied to JPEG images without additional editing.
A Collaboration Unveiled In Los Angeles
The Leica Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition made its official debut at the Leica Store and Gallery in Los Angeles, where Formula 1 presenter Ariana Bravo and 2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button introduced the collaboration.
The presentation was accompanied by an exhibition featuring 26 motorsport photographs by Italian photographer Callo Albanese, whose work explores the visual world of Formula 1.

The exhibition highlighted the relationship between photography and motorsport, where timing, perspective and attention to detail can transform a fleeting moment into a lasting image.
For Leica, the partnership represents more than a special camera design. It brings together two disciplines where technology serves a larger purpose, whether that means achieving the fastest lap or capturing a moment that might otherwise disappear.

The Leica Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition is available from October 21, 2026, through Leica Stores, the official online store and selected retailers. With a retail price of $9,950 in the United States and €8,500 in the Netherlands, it occupies an exclusive position within the Q3 family.
The result is a camera that celebrates the engineering culture of Formula 1 while remaining unmistakably Leica, bringing the spirit of the racetrack into the hands of photographers.
