Mercedes-AMG's Electric CLA Simulates a Petrol Engine’s Feel

Mercedes-AMG's Electric CLA Simulates a Petrol Engine’s Feel

The new Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4MATIC+ offers haptic feedback in the seats, designed to simulate the feeling of a classic petrol engine's gear shifts. It is part of a system called AMGFORCE S+, which also generates authentic engine sounds and virtual shifts to preserve a specific character behind the wheel, even as the powertrain goes fully electric.

This new performance model from Mercedes arrives in two forms, a four-door Coupé and a Shooting Brake. Both are built on the same platform as the new CLA, a car that was named Car of the Year in 2025 and also recognized by Euro NCAP as the safest vehicle it tested last year.

The drivetrain uses three compact axial-flux motors, a principle shared with the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door. Two motors power the rear axle and a third drives the front, producing a combined output of 680 hp, or 500 kW. This allows the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds. A fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ system distributes power between the wheels in real time.

    Range and Engineering

The battery is a 94 kWh unit that operates on 800-volt technology. This provides a WLTP range of up to 670 kilometers for the Coupé and 640 for the Shooting Brake, enough to travel from Malmö to Stockholm on a single charge. With DC charging at up to 330 kW, it’s possible to add 270 kilometers of range in ten minutes.

The chassis was developed specifically for this model, featuring adaptive AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension and seven available drive programs. Aerodynamics are managed by an active rear spoiler on the Coupé and an active roof spoiler on the Shooting Brake, which adjust to speed and drive mode to improve stability and reduce energy consumption.

    Digital Integration

Inside, the car’s digital platform is MBUX, built on Mercedes-Benz’s own MB.OS operating system. The system integrates AI from ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing, and Google Gemini. It is also supplemented with AMG-specific functions for drivers who wish to analyze or fine-tune the car’s handling characteristics.

The combination of extreme electric performance with engineered sensory feedback shows how the brand is approaching its electric future. It is a clear effort to blend new technology with a familiar driving character.
